The Tie Bar, Tie Clip and Tie Mags®

I know most of you know how to properly wear a tie bar. This post is for the young men who want to upgrade their wardrobe. And for the Gentlemen who are looking for that perfect accessory that will give them a classic look.

The purpose of the tie bar is to keep your tie in place. I can’t stand on those windy days, seeing their tie flying all over the place. This is not a good look.

There are some exceptions. Depending on the stance of your jacket you’re going to have to use your own judgment for placement.

If you have a 3-button jacket your stance is going to be a little higher so you’ll have to move the tie bar up to the third button or in between the second and third button. The two and one button jackets you can go with the fourth button or in between the third and fourth.

You also have the option of the Tie Mags® – The Tie Mags®, is a modern take on the tie tack, in my opinion.

Remember when wearing your tie bar it doesn’t just clip the front and back of the tie. It’s supposed to fasten both ends to the placket of your shirt. You’re defeating the purpose if you’re only clipping the front and back of the tie.

A placket is the extra piece of fabric that runs down the outside of the shirt near the buttonholes. You have three types of plackets; front placket, French placket (no placket) and the concealed placket.

Besides aesthetics purposes, it also plays a part in maintaining the shape of the shirt. Your shirt comes under a great deal of stress from twisting and pulling.

Side note: I prefer the tie bar instead of the clip. The tie clip has a tendency of leaving an indentation or a wrinkle. If you have an indentation or wrinkle, do not iron it out. A small wrinkle, hang it up on your tie rack overnight. If you have sort of a stubborn wrinkle then roll the tie-up starting with the small end and let it sit for a day. If the wrinkle is out of control then steam it. Again do not iron your ties.

You don’t need to wear a tie bar with a waistcoat (vest) or cardigan. It’s redundant. They both hold your tie in place.
