One of the best things about being a cigar smoker is the meeting of different people and talking about the cigar(s) you like. As I mentioned in a previous post, cigar smokers are a diverse group. We come from all over the world, have different educational backgrounds as well as different political beliefs. The one thing that unites is is our love of the leaf.
The leaf is what we call cigars because they come from the tobacco leaf. Not your traditional leaf as there is a beautiful process that goes into making cigars; but that is a post for another time. The leaf is what bonds the cigar smokers to one another and allows us to form a bond that only those in our circle understand. A saying you will hear many cigar smokers say is, “It is a lifestyle.” We say that because it is. There is nothing like the relaxation that comes from smoking a fine cigar with a fabulous spirit and then pairing it with awesome conversation. The smoke is great, but I firmly believe it is the conversation that keeps many people coming back.
A popular question is “What are you smoking?” and this is what gets the conversation started. Once you tell someone what you are smoking, they will either say they have had that one as well or not, and whether or not they enjoyed it. Of course this will be a 20 minute or more conversation because it is necessary to go over different flavors of what you like and why. You will even talk about the brands you choose and why. All of this because of this special love we have for the leaf.
If you have never smoked a cigar my first question is always why? Especially if someone is a cigarette smoker. Cigarettes provide instant gratification whereas the cigar is going to be a longer smoke. It is definitely something you take your time with. “A good smoker, like a good lover, always takes his time with a cigar.” So my question for you is, What are you smoking?
